Two teams that are struggling worse than Tiger on the Olympic Club’s first 8 holes resides within the DMV, my beloved Orioles and the Nats. Starting with the Nats-who have dropped 4 straight- but still lead the NL East by 3 games over the Mets. I’m not as worried about them for two simple reasons.

#1. Starting pitching. Natstown possess two stoppers in Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez who can stop any losing streak with 8 shutout innings.

#2. The division. Don’t get me wrong, I still think the Phils will be heard from. But the rest of the division’s fanbases-outside of Miami-can do what Oriole/Ravens fans usually do in in Mid-June. Start counting down the days to NFL training camp.

Also riding a cold-streak offensively only my home-town Padres could experience is the Orioles. Back to back shutouts by reputable pitchers like Dickey and Santana isn’t going to make me pour all my spiked #orangekoolaid down the drain. Not yet, at least. Winning 2 of 3 in Hotlanta over the weekend got me greedy as they invaded Citi Field. My mistake. I need to remember the motto I’ve been preaching since early April, keep expectations low and you can’t be disappointed.

But that being said, I still think they are in it for the long haul. Problem is I’m not sure what the “long-haul” is. Is it a above .500 record, which before the season was like Lee Evans actually catching that perfect pass in the AFC Championship? Or is it an actually playoff sweat into Sept? I would bet the latter, but I’m a fanboy, so proceed with caution.

This coming weekend though, it’s the MASNCUP2. And nothing against Natstown-as I’ve seen as many games there as OPACY at this point (Thanks K-Rock)-but its time this “rivalry” moves to a real ballpark. Less Ben’s Chili Bowl and more Boog’s Bar-Be-Que. Less concrete jungle, more Eutaw St. And of course, I’ve put my all and important Twitter avi on the line with our boy @Sportsyack again as we run back the series.

Plus, it sounds like a sizable DC/VA Nats-crew will be making the trek North to the Charm City, so be nice if you run into them, animals. I’m working on new avi’s for our friends to the South as I type as well as polishing the MASNCUP to bring Saturday night to show off. Only problem for them is that it’s probably going back home on the nubby Lightrail with your boy as the O’s win another BattleoftheBeltways series. Please take a peak at this hilarious video done by Steven Mobley @mobster84 on the Nats and O’s budding rivalry. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlORK-aqwhw&feature=plcp.

Jim Palmer, Dave McNally, Mike Cuellar, Mike Flanagan, Scott McGregor, Mike Mussina…and Dylan Bundy? As we enter the Memorial Day weekend, it’s not so far-fetched to imagine the #4 overall draft pick of 2011 someday joining the list of the greatest pitchers in Orioles history.

Since Bundy is set to make his Hi-A Frederick Keys debut tonight, let’s review his stats with the Delmarva Shorebirds in the South Atlantic League: 8 starts, 30 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0ER, 2 BB, and 40 K’s. You read that right, Bundy gave up zero earned runs and had a 20:1 strikeout to walk ratio in 30 innings spanning the 8 starts. That’s complete and utter domination for any pitcher, let alone a 19 year old pitching in his first season of professional baseball.

While Bundy has understandably garnered much national attention for overwhelming his Low-A competition, the Orioles have been getting criticized from the start for not starting Bundy higher in the player development food chain. ESPN’s Keith Law has been one of the more vocal critics of the Orioles and has continued to express his complete disagreement with how the young is being handled.

Law has suggested that the Orioles have wasted the first two months of young Bundy’s career having him pitch against inferior competition (Law would have started Bundy in AA). The Orioles, for their part, have argued that they want to give a teenager getting his first taste of pro-ball time to adjust to the rigors of being a professional, like long bus rides and living life on the road.

Aside from easing Bundy into the professional environment socially, the Orioles have also been keeping the kid gloves on Bundy to help limit his innings in his first pro season. Along with the Shorebirds using a 6-man rotation, Bundy started out pitching only 3 innings apiece in his first three starts, moved up to 4 innings for his next two, had a 3 inning stint where he struck out 8 batters that was shortened due to pitch count, and followed that up with two 5 inning starts. The Oriole’s plan has been to build Bundy up slowly and then unleash him with no restrictions after 10 starts of 5 IP. This will also allow Bundy to potentially pitch the entire season rather than be shutdown early to limit his innings.

So who’s right? Are the Orioles being too prudent with their potential ace or have they been right to ease him into the professional ranks? As with everything, time will tell. For me personally, after witnessing the laundry list of past O’s minor league pitchers that have washed out due to arm injury or immaturity, I’m totally on board with how the front office is handling Bundy. I’d certainly rather see the team err on the side of caution.

This kid is special and there is no need to rush things. Bundy’s promotion to the Keys is his next big step. He has eight more starts of 5 IP until the Orioles’ stated goal of giving him ten 5 IP outings. Then the gloves come off. I think we’ll see Bundy get at least five starts in Hi-A with the Keys. IF the dominant trend continues, I’d imagine we’d see him in AA Bowie by sometime in early July. That’s pretty fast, in my opinion. Besides, as we’ve witnessed in the past, once players reach AA they become only a phone call away from playing at Camden Yards.

If the Orioles can sustain their winning into late August and early September, we may just get the added treat of seeing the debut of the next great Oriole pitcher. However, if we don’t and Dylan Bundy finishes the year at AA, all is not lost. Remember, this kid is only 19 years old. I want to see this kid pitch for the Orioles for 20 years, not rushed along and ruined in the process. For the time being, let’s revel in having the #1 prospect in baseball and go out and see him pitch for the Keys and maybe even the Baysox. I want to see Bundy in Baltimore as much as the next guy, but let’s make sure he gets there in one piece.

Baseball is a wacky, wacky sport. After Sunday’s Boston Marathon, your Baltimore Orioles came home to the friendly confines of OPACY to entertain the 2-time defending AL Champ Texas Rangers with baseball’s best record. Problem with that was the Birds pitching staff was taxed more than the Upper Class and even Sunday’s hero Chris Davis was unavailable. Add in the fact that Brian Matauz hasn’t exactly been Nolan Ryan in regards to logging innings and you could see an ‘over” wager in the offing. And take advantage the Rangers did dropping 2 TD’s on the weary Birds before a pathetic 11K at the Yard.

I say pathetic because of what this picked to lose 100 games baseball club has done the past two weeks including an impressive 5-1 trip through NY and Boston. And save the “it was cold” or the “it was a Monday night” and of course my favorite “wait till the kids get out of school” shtick. Not good enough. Listen, I’m as guilty as the next Charm City resident, but I have a hundred kids and 7 p.m. is when the Chinese fire drill gets underway in our abode. I will say, that comp or no comps, I WILL be at the yard sometime this week or weekend and so should you, Oriole Nation.

It’s not that I’m trying to preach to you about how you should spend your hard earned scratch. Far from the notion. But based on the calls to the local City of Charm sports-radio stations it seems to me not everyone is exactly drinking the orange kool aid just yet. Text message muscles and mouth-breathing callers using the same old rhetoric like “let’s see if it lasts’ or “I hate the owner so I’m not going to put anymore $ in his engorged bank account”. I get it. But wouldn’t it be a novelty to actually support the players on the field and a manager that WANTED to be here (How is Bobby V doing in Boston) instead of spewing the same old tired hate? I’m not sure how long this ride is going to last, but as long it’s going my over-sized backside will take a seat on the wagon.

Before I get to my first round mock draft, it would be silly if not dumb not to promote the fact that Chalk Talk had 7 NFL draft prospects on the show last Sunday. Anchor and captain of the USS Chalk Talk, Tim Herb, did an outstanding job in getting the likes of Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd, Clemson’s massive DT Brandon Thompson, TCU’s madman LB Tank Carter, Colorado’s stud offensive tackle Ryan Miller, draft board rising CB Aaron Henry out of Wisconsin, sleeper RB out of Tennessee Tauren Poole and hard hitting safety out of Ok St, Markelle Martin. Of course, we are rooting for all the players in the draft, but we will be watching intendly on where these guys go come the weekend.

Floyd is projected as high as number 10 to the Buffalo Bills and probably won’t fall past the Arizona Cardinals at 13. Size, speed, athleticism comes to mind when you put on the tape of this draft eligible junior. But it’s his productivity that stands out for me, especially since he was double and sometimes triple covered all season. Thompson could also sneak into the late first round and who ever picks “Yams” will be ecstatic. But no matter how it goes, we are sure to reach out to these great interviews after they land with their new NFL team sometime in the future.

So with that out of the way, it’s about that time. The first time of many that NFL-heads everywhere begin to break out their new and old school jerseys. The time of year you think you are Ozzie freaking Newsome and you have under covered the next Thom Brady in the 6th round. The time of year hammered Jets and Giants fans find themselves in the middle of a Jersey Shore episode, only this one takes place inside Radio City Music Hall. The time of year Baltimore’s own Mel Kiper Jr. gets more air time than Ryan Seacrest.

Here is how I see the first round going…

1. Colts-Andrew Luck-Stanford, QB. Best QB prospect since John Elway. Can’t miss, unless he gets hurt.

2. Redskins-Robert Griffin III-Baylor, QB. Welcome to DC, RG3. No pressure.

3. Vikings-Ryan Kalil-USC, OT. This massive road grader will open plenty of holes for A-Pete and keep Christian Ponder’s jersey clean.

4. Browns-Trent Richardson-”Bama, RB. Might be the best athlete in the draft (Or Morris Claiborne) and the Browns need playmakers badly.

5. Tampa Bay-Morris Claiborne-LSU, DB. The Bucs secondary is terrible. Ronde Barber is 100 and the NFC South can sling it (Brees, Newton, Ryan).

6. St Louis- Justin Blackmon-OkSt, WR. Terrell Owens reincarnated on the off the field. But the Rams would have taken him at #2, so the trade works.

7. Jacksonville-David DeCastro-Stanford, G. If the Jags are interested in winning games instead of filling seats, then this should be the pick.

8. Miami-Luke Kuechly-BC, LB. I just don’t believe the Ryan Tannehill hype. All Kuechly does is make tackles and who doesn’t need that.

9. Carolina-Fletcher Cox-Miss St, DT. The Panthers are loaded on offense, but awful on defense. Cox is the best DT tackle so this is a solid selection.

10. Buffalo-Michael Floyd-ND, WR. Call it a bias (since he was on our radio show), but Floyd paired with Stevie Johnson helps circle the Bills wagon.

11. Trade-Kansas City moves back one spot and Seattle takes-Ryan Tannehill, A&M, QB. I’ve heard from enough sources that nut Pete Carroll loves Tanny. But remember SeaChicken fan, this also loved Charlie Whitehurst and Tavaris Jackson too. At least Tannehill’s girl is solid.

12. Kansas City-Dontari Poe-Memphis, DT. The combine hero moves into the top 15. If he is as good on the field as at the combine, then the Chiefs stole the next Hgoti Ngata.

13. Arizona-Riley Reiff-Iowa, OT. That sound you heard was Bolts GM AJ Smith kicking his desk over. Hopefully for the Cards he’s not Robert Gallery.

14. Dallas-Mark Barron-”Bama, S. Jerry Jones might move up as high as 10 to make sure he gets this punisher. The Boys’ need secondary identity.

15. Philadelphia- Quinton Coples-UNC, DE. Extremely talented, but a 10-cent brain. Perfect fit for that knuckle-headed roster in the City of Brotherly Love.

16. New York Jets- Kendall Wright-Baylor, WR. The Jets are a circus, so this pick fits perfectly. They need offensive and defensive help up front, so a Santonio Holmes clone makes perfect sense.

17. Cincinnati- Stephon Gilmore-SC, CB. Randy Milligen’s Bungles snap up a player that was projected to go in the top 10. With two first rounders, they can do that.

18. BOLTS- Jonathan Martin-Stanford, OT. Not sexy, but since Reiff and Barron are both gone the Bolts need to over-draft Martin or move back. I also like another ‘Bama product in Dre Kirkpatrick, but AJ doesn’t like guys with character issues. Martin is a right tackle, but I see him taken left tackle snaps once Jared Gaither quits on the Bolts like he’s done everywhere else.

19. Chicago-Kevin Zeitler-Wisconsin, OG. Jay Culter got his bi-polar former teammate Brandon Marshall in a trade. But he will have a tough time getting him the ball from his back and a Wisconsin offensive lineman is usually safe pick.

20. Tennessee-Melvin Ingram-SC, DE. The Titans haven’t had anyone that can disrupt the passing game since Jevon Kerse. Ingram was also projected by many to go as early as 12, so this would be a value pick.

21. Cincinnati- Courtney Upshaw, ‘Bama, DE. The Bengals get lucky again. Upshaw is loved by Marvin Lewis and no Bengal had more than 7 sacks last year.

22. Cleveland Browns-Michael Brockers-LSU, DT. This raw, but promising 6-5, 322 pounder could play nose or a more versatile tackle role. Like ‘Bama defensive players, you can’t go wrong drafting LSU ones either.

23. Detroit-Mike Adams-Ohio St, OT. This guy was a top ten pick before last season, but was injured and just didn’t perform like a high pick during Big Ten Play. He has also had weight issues in the past, but his talent is worth the pick at this spot.

24. Pittsburgh-Coby Fleener-Stanford, TE. Been compared to former Raven Todd Heap and with Heath Miller getting up there in years the 4th Stanford product is a solid selection.

25. Denver-Nick Perry-USC, DE. Pairing this USC product with last years first rounder Von Miller could be like deja vu for Peyton Manning. Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis 2.0.

26. Houston-Stephen Hill-G-Tech, WR. If it wasn’t Poe making waves at the combine, it was Hill and his freakish skills that was turning heads. Unbelievable speed and size makes this a perfect pick for the rising Texans.

27. Cleveland-Brandon Weeden-OK St, QB. This guy might be 40, but he is accurate and smart. Incumbent QB Colt McCoy will be pushed by this former MLB player early in training camp.

28. Green Bay- Doug Martin-Boise St, RB. Martin is the kind of versatile back cold-weather back who would fit in perfectly at Lambeau. Plus he is a winner and good character guy. Another solid selection for the Pack brass.

29. RAVENS-Dont’a Hightower-’Bama, LB. Ozzie does it again. Somehow, some way the Ravens consistently make solid selections. Even though they need offensive line help, Hightower is the best player on the board and you know how Ozzie does.29. Detroit-Mike Adams-Ohio St, OT. This guy was a top ten pick before last season, but was injured and just didn’t impress during Big Ten play. He is also considered someone who could have weight problems down the line, but his risk is worthy of the selection.

30. San Francisco-Harrison Smith-Notre Dame, S. The 2nd best safety in the draft is a steal for the best defensive team from last season. Smart, fast and hits like a truck, Smith will fit in perfectly with coach Jim Harbaugh’s scheme.

31. New England-Jerel Worth-Michigan St, DT. Any defensive player is an upgrade over what the Pats had last season, and they still made the Super Bowl. Worthy could pair with that monster Vince Wilfork to create havoc from AFC East QB’s.

32. New York Giants-Peter Konz-Wisconsin, C,G. The Super Bowl champs could use some OL help and Konz is the best center in the draft. He can also play both guard positions and like I stated before, you can’t go wrong with a Badger lineman.

Oriole Magic:

Minus the KGregg effect, the trip to the New York of Canada was a successful one as the Birds were able to win a road series in a building that has a been a house of horrors the past couple seasons. Add that to the amazing comeback on the Southside on Monday night and Oriole Nation can puff their chests out after 10 games. That is because the team everyone picked to lose at least 100 games has a legitimate 6-4 record and leads the AL East for the time being. Standouts from the weekend include my personal hero CF Adam Jones (SIGN HIM), Nolan Reimold and Jesus in Cleats himself Matt Weiters. Reimold followed up his super productive weekend in Toronto Monday night with another 9th inning bomb (3rd-overall) and sports a eye-popping .353 average early in the season. @SimplyAJ10 (twitter handle) followed in his outfield partner’s footsteps with his 4th-bomb of the young season that tied the game and sent it into extra’s where Weiters took over. After hammering a towering 8th inning blast, Weiters smacked his first big league grand slam in the 10th that cemented the comeback and provided the Orioles with another opening series road win.

But even with this surprising start, most of the Oriole faithful are still in “battered wife mode”, which I totally understand since the team in the Charm City has had a losing record for 15 straight seasons. Add that to the fact they have finished in the cellar of the AL East for 6 straight years and I can see why most fans are taking a wait and see approach. But for me, that is just lazy and negative. Maybe it’s the cocktail half-full mentality, but I’ve been taking the stance since Spring Training of looking for positives on a team with no expectations and enjoying the ride in the process. Do I think this early season success will materialize into a full-blown playoff sweat come August? Probably not. But with an extra playoff spot added this season, it will at least give the die-hards a reason to go to the yard late in the season, if the team can stay competitive at the very least. One thing is for sure, the Orioles front office is surely answering their phones today with “Hello and thanks for calling the 1st place Orioles, how can I assist you with tickets?”

Nats Fever:

There’s a new “Natitude” going on about 40 miles south of Charm City. The artist formally known as the Expos are off to their best start in their short lived existence (7-3). Backed by one of the best pitching rotations 1 through 5 has Nats Nation sweating a playoff run. And it’s not just former Aztec Stephen Strasburg that is changing the culture in Nats Town (though he has been bzilly in his first two starts). It’s been an early mixture of new-comers like Gio Gonzalez and Edwin Jackson combined with healthy fire-ballers like Jordan Zimmerman and Russ Detwler that will keep the Nats relavated all summer, even when the Skins and RG3 start spinning the pill in late July.

Well if the tourney is half as good as the hoops were last week then we are in for one great dance party. Besides the Big East Tourney (which is usually awesome) the rest of the tournament games were fantastic and gave those with bracket fever a distinct look at which teams might be the ones making that special run. Or at least making it out of the first weekend. Starting with the Big 12 final between two teams I feel could make a deep run in Mizzuo and Baylor and ending with the amazing Big 10 final that turned out to be for the last #1 seed between Ohio St and Mich St, the weekend of quality hoops was undeniable. But with Championship Week in the rear view now, it’s time to turn our attention to the “real” thing this coming Thursday (unless you care about the Play in Games Tuesday and Wednesday).

South Bracket:

At first glace the brackets gave me a vibe that a ton of chalk will be making it through the first weekend. Because I could do a thesis on the brackets, I will instead just concentrate on the South and West side of the brackets and tomorrow focus in on the East and Midwest.

The #1 overall seed Kentucky resides in the South and probably has the easiest route to New Orleans in my mind. That’s because the #2 seed Duke is probably the worst #2 seed I’ve seen in 20 years. Plus, you have Indiana as the #4 seed and they just lost one of their best players to a knee injury in last weeks Big 10 tourney. I do like the #3 seeded Baylor Bears (and have all year), but even if they make to the Sweet 16 weekend they would have to beat Wildcats to make it to NOLA and that’s not likely to happen.

Now a second round match up of UCONN and Kentucky on paper sounds intriguing, but I’m not sure the defending champs get by DGools’ Cyclones of Iowa St in the 8/9 game anyway. Sleeper teams in this bracket could be Wichita St and UNLV, but look for Ashley Judd and the rest of the Bluegrass state to be invading Bourbon St come the first weekend of April. Kentucky

West Bracket:

This bracket is loaded with teams I’ve been jocking, which has me struggling to pick a Final Four participant. The #1 seed Michigan St is gritty, senior laden and might posses the best big game coach in the college hoops Tom Izzo.

But for as much as I want to pick a sparty party to happen, there are too many mine fields along the way if coach Izzo wants to make his 7th Final Four appearance. Teams like the #3 seeded Marquette Golden Eagles come to mind as well as lower seeded teams like Murray St, New Mexico and Florida could be the ones wearing Cinderella’s shoes.

But that team I’m going with in this bracket actually probably should have been a #1 seed (if Ohio St would have beat Mich St in the Big 10 final)) and might have the best overall talent in the tourney this side of UNC. The Missouri Tigers are loaded and can get up and down the floor like the Rebels of UNLV circa ’1991. A huge front court combined with lightening quick guards that can stroke the 3 leads me to ride the Tigers to the Final Four. The sleeper teams in this bracket were mentioned above, but don’t be surprised if Big East Champ Louisville is upset by Davidson in the first round. Missouri.

East Bracket:

Monday I concentrated on the South and West side of the brackets, so today I will tackle the East and Midwest. Syracuse is the #1 seed in the East and the 2nd overall seed in the tourament. But even before the Fab Melo suspension I didn’t think the Orange would be one of the Final Four and here’s why. Too many stars with not enough balls to go around, a la the Knicks. Plus, the scurinity of the program of late will be intensified during the tourney and I don’t think this team is mentally strong enough to handle it and win 6 straight. Now I do have them moving along to the Elite 8, but that is where this up and down season and potential career ends for coach Jim Boeheim. Yep, I have the Buckeye’s of Ohio St behind stud center Jared Sullinger making to the Final Four. I heart teams with experience at the point (Aaron Craft is silly) and go to guys in the clutch like Sullinger inside and David Lightly outside. Plus, coach Thad Motta is an under rated coach, but all he does is makes keep runs in the tourney (though he hasn’t won one yet).

My sleeper team in this bracket is Montana and here’s why. They are on a heater winning 12 straight and 18 of their last 19. Plus they play a team in the first round-Wisconsin-that makes the Hoyas of GTown look like Loyola Marymount circa 1988-89 at scoring the ball. Catching the 9.5 is a no-brainer, but if you don’t think Wisconsin has a chance of beating Vandy in the 2nd round, why not take Montana as an upset pick for your bracket? Speaking of Vandy, I also like them to reach at least the Sweet 16 weekend and they even have a good shot at beating the Fab-less Orange to reach the Elite 8. The KState vs. Southern Miss game is the toughest one for me to pick, but if you pinned me down I would go with Frank Martin and the experienced Wildcats to move along and face the Orangeman in the 2nd round. Ohio St

Midwest Bracket:

Waring, homer alert. Yep, I’m one of those douchey guys that likes the Tar Heels of Carolina and no I’m not from there. Though I have seen them play in both the Dean Dome and the new and improved Smith Center, if that makes a difference. Homer or not, this bracket is no cakewalk for one of the most talented teams in the dance. Especially since the #2 seed is Kansas and how badly does CBS covet that Elite 8 match up. Cha ching. But both of these blue blooded programs will have plenty of IED’s to maneuver through to give CBS this gift. After KU hammers Detroit in the first round (only laying 15), I have them matching up with St. Mary’s. You might not even know where St. Mary’s is, but after they slaughter a mediocre at best Purdue squad you will. They have a point guard in Matt Dellavedova that is fantastic and you know how I love good PG in the tourney. So if the JHawks sleep on them, Bill Self can add another choke job to this expanding resume. The Heels are nasty. But as I’ve pointed out in the past they close games about as good as Kevin Gregg does for the Orioles. Not well to say the least. But they shouldn’t be in a close game until maybe the Sweet 16 where they will play Temple (in my bracket) or Michigan.

The team I wouldn’t sleep on is the NC State Wolfpack. They open vs. the #6 seeded Aztecs of SDSU and they are favored by 2. And guess what I like that even though I’m a Aztec fan boy and here’s why. The Wolfpack have seemed to get it together at the right time and played the Heels to the wire in the ACC Semi’s. The fighting Aztecs have been doing with smoke and mirrors all season and poesses a coach that has rattled off the necessary wins to cut the nets down in Steve Fisher. Problem is they are not the same team by any stretch as last year’s squad that took eventual champ UCONN into OT and would’ve won if not for some bone headed mistakes (shocker). And if the Pack do get by the Aztecs, the offensively challenged Hoyas of G-Town await, if they can sneak by Belmont in the first round that is. But when it’s all said and done the Tar Heels and Roy Williams will be going to another Final Four with a great chance to win the whole joint. Just saying. UNC.

So in closing, my brackets that are sure to be up in flames by the weekend include Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio St and UNC as my Final Four selections. I also have Ohio St playing Kentucky in the final and the Buckeye’s winning the whole joint with Aaron Craft named MOP of the Final Four.

Yes, I know their off-season decisions have made Vontaze Burfict’s combine performance look like he was RG3, but hear me out on this one. The easy thing to do is club a franchise that is coming off it’s 14th-straight losing season (2nd only to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 4 major North American sports). A team that, despite needs at corner infield and starting pitching, decided to sell it’s dying fan-base a couple Asian imports and Wilson Benoit as off-season acquisitions.

And I understand that the man making these transactions (Dan Duquette) is like that 4 at the bar late in the evening that “needs” a ride home. Can you say best available? I just mean to say that the Orioles GM job wasn’t exactly hot enough for any up and coming GM’s to take as their first job. So instead, Mr. Angelos was forced to head down south on his GM draft board to convince another cheap, lapdog to boss around (see the above mentioned 4). But with all this negativity surrounding this floundering franchise, is there chance that the exceptions are so low this year that the Birds could actually make you feel as good as you did when Robert Andino knocked those chowder-heads out of the playoffs last year?

If you can put down your black and orange hate-colored glasses for just a minute I will tell you why that warm Natty Boh could taste ice cold come August. First, is there any chance the starting pitching could be worse than last season? Because Charm City’s pitching staff ranked dead last in the majors in team ERA at 4.83. They also had the fewest quality starts (55), which correlated in overuse of thin at best bullpen. One of the major disappointments, Brian Matusz, is much better than the 1-9-record and 10.69 ERA he posted last year. Working out with fitness guru Brady Anderson in Cali this past off-season, he has strengthen his core and according to many looks to be in much better shape than last year. He might start the season in AAA, but I expect to see him at Camden Yards no later than early May.

The other young starters with upside-Zach Britton and Chris Tillman-also struggled late in the season as they began to wear down. Tillman is the wild card for me. His stuff is #1-starter material, but if he could bring his skirt-chasing ability off the field onto the bump every 5th day, he could be Cy Young. Britton, on the other hand, came out on fire last year winning his first 6 of 7 games and was talked about as a potential Rookie of the Year candidate at one point. But he too wore down and by the end of the year was demoted to AAA as well. If all three of these potential building blocks realize their talent and slowly build up confidence, the Orioles could actually be in a really good position for years to come, for once. If not, it’s back to the same drawing board for P.A. and whatever GM he brings in next.

Of course pitching isn’t the only thing Orioles nation is concerned with this season. That because their highest paid player and supposed best run producer, Nick Markakis, has been a huge letdown the past two seasons. For a guy who’s salary is close to $11 million per, stats like .284 15 bombs and a pedestrian 73 RBI’s aren’t exactly Josh Hamilton type numbers. And yes I know he might be the best right fielder in the game defensively, but last time I checked players aren’t paid for their defense in baseball. If so, Ozzie Smith wouldn’t be grasping for a job in baseball like he is with the Cardinals this year. And please stop with the “he had no one in the lineup to protect him” bit, because it’s a flawed argument. Center fielder and soon to be an ex-Oriole, Adam Jones, has hit in front and behind him as did Vlad Guerrero and Mark Reynolds (who hit 35 bombs last year). No more excuses for a player who’s not criticized enough in the local media-in my opinion- because of all his do-gooding off the field in the community. I’m all for charity work, but how about you concentrate on some philanthropy as the Orioles 3 hitter.

As a sports-talk consumer (#loser) I’ve heard many callers refer to the former Orioles GM as Andy Mac”Fail” in regards to his time within warehouse walls. And maybe some of his decisions have not worked out in the short term, but I think his long term vision is in motion behind some of his draft selections. The biggest one, Jesus in cleats, catcher Matt Weiters didn’t exactly go Mike Piazza in his first couple years offensively. But unlike a right fielder, catchers make their name defensively first and Weiters is already considered one of the best in baseball. And he might have holes in his big, looping swing, but with his great work ethic and commitment to the game he should improve offensively every year.

In addition to drafting Weiters, MacPhail fleeced the Mariners for Adam Jones, raped the Twins for shortstop JJ Hardy while drafting the likes of Matusz, Britton and Manny Machado. Machado and last years draft selection, P Dylan Bundy, were ranked #11, #12 overall best prospects by Baseball America. Add non-drafted free agent infielder Jonathan Schoop (currently ranked #83 overall) to MacPhail’s resume and you can see why I see a little light at the end of this 14-year dark tunnel. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/rankings/organization-top-10-prospects/2012/2612770.htm.

Listen, I’m not trying to sell you a bag of oregano and telling you it’s some of Jamaica’s finest. Far from it. What I am asking you to do before you take the easy way out and ridicule this already beat-down franchise while pounding O-Bombs opening day at Pickles is to look just a bit deeper. Many of us who root for the Cartoon bird were overly optimistic before last year’s opener because of Buck and the way they ended the previous season. But they weren’t ready to make that jump last year and that was as evident as Camden Yards dwindling attendance figures. But sometimes young teams take a step backwards before they ascend forward and that’s is what I hoping we see this summer at the Yard!

Even with Selection Sunday less than 2 weeks away, MLB spring training MLB under way and the NBA “real” season about to begin, I’ll start with what sells more than a junkie in West Baltimore.

Of course I’m talking about the NFL and the Naked Olympics it’s been conducting in Indy. If you read this garbage or listen to our radio show (http://chalktalklive.com/ Sundays from 11-1 on ESPN 1300 AM in Baltimore), you already know my opinion on the combine. And although I did stick to my guns and watch more Nick Jr. than the combine, I was interested to hear how my man-crush Andrew Luck and everyone’s superhero RG3 performed. Well let’s just say they are both going to be able to take care of their families for many years as Luck cemented his #1 overall status with some eye-popping athletic ability while RG3′s stock rose even higher than it originally was.

Two studs that only increased their value at the combine.

With this Christmas-type news, new Rams coach Jeff Fisher’s heavy-porn mustache couldn’t camoflouge his ear-to-ear smile. That’s because his #2 overall pick might be the most coveted pick of the last ten years and here’s why. You see, the Rams already have their franchise QB (Sam Bradford), and even if they wanted RG3, they couldn’t trade Bradford due to his absurd salary. That leaves teams like the Browns (#4 pick) and Skins (#6 pick) drooling at the prospect of trading the farm for the right to select RG3 and get their dwindling fan bases back in the process. But what if you could get an 80% healthy Peyton Manning instead and keep all of your draft picks to help fill other needs?

These two studs weren’t the only ones that were opening scouts eyes with off the chart athletic ability. That’s because if anybody tells you that any other player did more to increase his stock at the 2012 scouting combine than Memphis defensive tackle Dontari Poe, you know that person wasn’t watching Monday’s drills for defensive linemen and linebackers. After putting up a combine-best 44 reps in the 225-pound bench press, Poe went out to the track at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium and ran an unofficial 4.87 40-yard dash … at 6-foot-4, and 346 pounds. His official best time was 4.98, which is still ridiculous when you consider that Ndamukong Suh ran an official 5.03 at his combine, and he was 40 pounds lighter than Poe.

Made himself plenty of cash with his amazing combine.

Even more interesting was the fact that at the combine, Poe had an unofficial 1.70 10-yard split, which absolutely speaks to his ability to explode off the snap and do really bad things to offensive linemen. Getting the numbers for that initial burst is very important — far more important than the whole 40 — when looking at linemen and linebackers who can explode off the snap. To put Poe’s split in perspective, future endbackers like Nick Perry and Shea McClellin had 10-yard splits in the 1.57 to 1.59 range — and Poe outweighs McClellin by about 100 pounds. Yikes.

After the run, Mike Mayock of the NFL Network raved about Poe’s movement skills, opining that Poe looks a lot like Haloti Ngata of the Baltimore Ravens at the line, and especially in zone drops. Ngata has a rare ability to “get skinny” through blockers at 350 pounds, and there’s tape of Poe doing the same sort of stuff.

Every year around this time, the NFL brings their over-the-top Broadway show to Indy for what I refer to as the Naked Olympics a.k.a the Scouting Combine. Front office personal from each NFL team can usually be spotted eating a Porterhouse steak paired with a 80%-marked up Bordeaux at St. Elmo’s Steakhouse after analyzing 300+ pound men in their underwear for 10 hours. They will ask questions like, “Which offensive lineman ran through the tires fastest?” Which WR caught the most balls from the juggs machine in 30 seconds? Or my personal favorite, the 40 yard dash, which has made plenty of burners some cash while sending other potential first rounders tumbling into the 3rd round with a subpar time. But what does that have to do with playing football on the field you ask? Great question.

Wasn't a combine hero, but turned out "OK".

I mean, what does it matter if the guy can run a 4.20 on turf in his Under Armour briefs? My question would be, what does he run when he is chasing down a Joe Flacco bomb with pads on and a 6’3″ corner draped all over him? And I get the NFL scouts want to see what kinda of feet these massive beasts posses, but come on, the tire bit, really? Side note, why is it that all of the fat lineman have to take their shirts off exposing their full racks for the world to see? Isn’t it cut-’em up season? And speaking of you, Combine watcher, you really need another hobby. Because as the King of the sports nerds and a self-appointed NFL crack buyer, I won’t let my remote even graze by the Naked Olympics. Instead I will be locked in on Nick Jr. watching the hottie from the Fresh Beat Band.

No one needs to see this. #D-cups

And this year the NFL has blown the top off the coverage. NFL Network sent over 100 camera’s for the show and countless analysts to break down the broad jump. Hell, there is even a mini radio row as sports station GMs are dying for more of the NFL drug to sell to their advertisers. And of course the NFL is getting into the act selling 200 TICKETS to this hacky event. Watching this naked skills competition is one thing from the comforts of your living room, but if you buy a ticket you need to re-evaluate you life and mix in some new hobbies. #loser

Could Charm City’s own baseball club really be up for sale privately? Many people in the know have said that for years, but still no smoke has risen from inside the Warehouse chimney a la The Pope bit. Even Orioles insiders like @danconnollysun tweeted me when I brought up the rumors: “I’ve heard it. At least once a year for the past 10. Usually around this time. Has never meant anything.” He might be right and has much more credibility when it comes to the Orioles than this hacky blogger ever will. And I understand majority owner Peter Angelos has said for years he has “no interest” in selling the club.

But he’s not exactly a spring chicken (he’ll be 83 on July 4) and just last year Forbes magazine estimated the Orioles were “only” valued at $376M, a six percent drop from the previous year. Do you really think they are going to increase in value before Mr. A either sells or meets his maker? And trust me, he’s not going to leave the Birds in the hands of his sons for myriad reasons that won’t be discussed here. Just trust me on that one.

So with all this as a backdrop. here’s what I got. Over the past couple of weeks/months, I’ve been receiving some very reliable intel from some very plugged-in sources (not within the Warehouse walls) that this time it might be for real. Of course outing these three different sources just isn’t going to happen right now. But what I am willing to “leak” is that if this intel is true and Angelos does indeed decide to sell the team to the group I’ve been hearing about, then Nikes, Reeboks, New Balances, et al will be off-limits at Camden Yards. If you bleed Black and Orange and have sat through a 9-inning Orioles blowout in late August in LF lower box seats, then you know where I’m going with this and you should be doing air kicks if it comes to fruition. Stay tuned…
