Where is O’s Nation?
Baseball is a wacky, wacky sport. After Sunday’s Boston Marathon, your Baltimore Orioles came home to the friendly confines of OPACY to entertain the 2-time defending AL Champ Texas Rangers with baseball’s best record. Problem with that was the Birds pitching staff was taxed more than the Upper Class and even Sunday’s hero Chris Davis was unavailable. Add in the fact that Brian Matauz hasn’t exactly been Nolan Ryan in regards to logging innings and you could see an ‘over” wager in the offing. And take advantage the Rangers did dropping 2 TD’s on the weary Birds before a pathetic 11K at the Yard.
I say pathetic because of what this picked to lose 100 games baseball club has done the past two weeks including an impressive 5-1 trip through NY and Boston. And save the “it was cold” or the “it was a Monday night” and of course my favorite “wait till the kids get out of school” shtick. Not good enough. Listen, I’m as guilty as the next Charm City resident, but I have a hundred kids and 7 p.m. is when the Chinese fire drill gets underway in our abode. I will say, that comp or no comps, I WILL be at the yard sometime this week or weekend and so should you, Oriole Nation.
It’s not that I’m trying to preach to you about how you should spend your hard earned scratch. Far from the notion. But based on the calls to the local City of Charm sports-radio stations it seems to me not everyone is exactly drinking the orange kool aid just yet. Text message muscles and mouth-breathing callers using the same old rhetoric like “let’s see if it lasts’ or “I hate the owner so I’m not going to put anymore $ in his engorged bank account”. I get it. But wouldn’t it be a novelty to actually support the players on the field and a manager that WANTED to be here (How is Bobby V doing in Boston) instead of spewing the same old tired hate? I’m not sure how long this ride is going to last, but as long it’s going my over-sized backside will take a seat on the wagon.
