    Are the Orioles for sale?

Could Charm City’s own baseball club really be up for sale privately? Many people in the know have said that for years, but still no smoke has risen from inside the Warehouse chimney a la The Pope bit. Even Orioles insiders like @danconnollysun tweeted me when I brought up the rumors: “I’ve heard it. At least once a year for the past 10. Usually around this time. Has never meant anything.” He might be right and has much more credibility when it comes to the Orioles than this hacky blogger ever will. And I understand majority owner Peter Angelos has said for years he has “no interest” in selling the club.

But he’s not exactly a spring chicken (he’ll be 83 on July 4) and just last year Forbes magazine estimated the Orioles were “only” valued at $376M, a six percent drop from the previous year. Do you really think they are going to increase in value before Mr. A either sells or meets his maker? And trust me, he’s not going to leave the Birds in the hands of his sons for myriad reasons that won’t be discussed here. Just trust me on that one.

So with all this as a backdrop. here’s what I got. Over the past couple of weeks/months, I’ve been receiving some very reliable intel from some very plugged-in sources (not within the Warehouse walls) that this time it might be for real. Of course outing these three different sources just isn’t going to happen right now. But what I am willing to “leak” is that if this intel is true and Angelos does indeed decide to sell the team to the group I’ve been hearing about, then Nikes, Reeboks, New Balances, et al will be off-limits at Camden Yards. If you bleed Black and Orange and have sat through a 9-inning Orioles blowout in late August in LF lower box seats, then you know where I’m going with this and you should be doing air kicks if it comes to fruition. Stay tuned…
